Can You Paint Aluminium Window Frames and Doors?

Aluminium windows and doors have been growing in popularity over recent years due to a variety of factors, including long-lasting durability, functionality and aesthetic appeal. However, if you’re looking to boost their aesthetics to add more colour to your doors or window frames, can aluminium doors and windows be painted?

The good news is it is possible to paint aluminium surfaces, and doing so can give your windows and doors a fresh, personalised appearance. However, it’s important to note that not all paints are suitable for use on aluminium. To ensure a long-lasting, professional finish that adheres properly to the metal and withstands the elements, you need to choose the right type of paint and follow the proper preparation process.

What Type Of Paint Can Be Used on Aluminium Doors and Window Frames?

There are two main paint types you can use.

  • Acrylic Paint:

This type of paint offers good adhesion and resistance. It is extremely durable and is designed for external or internal surfaces.

  • Epoxy Paint:

This paint also offers exceptional durability and adhesion. It is longer lasting out of the two, and can withstand harsh weather conditions. However, epoxy can more expensive than acrylic.

How To Paint On Aluminium?

Using these specialist paints can provide an enhanced and sleek look to your aluminium windows and doors. However, there are necessary steps to take before applying the paint to guarantee an effective finish. These include:

  • Clean the Surface

Remove any dirt or grease from the window or door by using soapy water. Then rinse it off and let it dry completely before moving onto the next step.

  • Apply a Coat of Primer

You can use a primer which is specifically designed for metal surfaces, which will enhance durability and provide an extra layer of protection.

  • Sand the Surface

Gently sand the aluminium with using a fine grit sandpaper to remove any small lumps on the primed surface.

  • Paint Top Coats

Use high-quality paint suitable for external and internal use, depending on your needs. Start at one of the top corners of the frame and work your way across. You can use a paintbrush to apply the paint in thin, uniform coats.

  • Allow to Dry

Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on drying times between coasts for effective results. Apply two to three coats, then let it dry. Continue repeating this process until everything is covered.

Before applying any paint, we recommend testing a small area first. If you are painting a large area, you can always use spray paint designed specifically for metal for a more effective and speedy process.

Why Choose Aluminium Windows and Doors?

Aside from their customisation options and versatility, aluminium windows and doors come with a multitude of benefits. They are robust and strong, which means they are extremely secure, providing a strong physical barrier that can make it hard for break-ins. Aluminium is estimated to have a life expectancy of at least 40 years if properly maintained. It is great at insulation in the winter and keeps cool air in when it gets warmer, making it an energy efficient choice and providing ultimate comfort at home. It is also extremely resilient, specifically against UV rays. Whilst most materials warp or flex from strong sunlight hitting their frames, aluminium can withstand these rays without deteriorating.
